No matter whether you’re searching for a heating repair specialist or you’re planning to buy a new heat pump, you should always do your research when choosing an HVAC contractor. South Carolina requires any HVAC technician to have experience working in the field so they are familiar with and have a complete understanding of things such as electrical wiring, refrigerant, combustion systems, airflow, ducts and more. A professional HVAC contractor should also be licensed and should carry some sort of liability insurance. Our professionals at Brown & Reaves Services, Inc. have several certifications such as the NATE (North American Technicians Excellence) certificate and NCI (National Comfort Institute) certificate. We are also certified in BPI (Building Performance Institute), Manual J, S, & D and Duct Blasting.

Our Maintenance Agreement

Every piece of equipment which is used every day and night gets worn out and needs maintenance. Even when you buy a new car you still need to clean it inside and out, and change the oil periodically to assure everything runs smoothly. The same holds true for your air conditioning and heating system. You need to remember to change your filters every couple of months, as well as clean the area around the compressor outside so there are no shrubs or leaves blocking the airflow.

However, even a new HVAC unit requires regular tune-ups done by a professional, to stay in top shape for many years. At Brown & Reaves Services, Inc. we offer several maintenance plans depending on the type of equipment you need us to care for. The customers who are part of our maintenance program get priority treatment in any heating and cooling emergencies.

Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your unit but helps it run at peak efficiency preventing the electric bill from skyrocketing.

Most Frequent HVAC Repair Service Calls

We gathered some of the most common HVAC issues which a homeowner can fix on their own with no help from our technicians.

My air conditioning won’t turn on

This one is a common problem but it’s the easiest fix. First you need to make sure your thermostat is set to “Heat” or “Cool” depending on your needs. Lower (or raise) the temperature by a couple of degrees and see if that fixes the problem. Thermostats differ and have various settings, so check your manual to get yourself familiar with your particular model. If you’re certain your settings are correct check for a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker to see if power is reaching the AC unit.

If all of the above suggestions won’t work your motor or compressor may need to be fixed. Call Brown & Reaves Services, Inc.

My air conditioning is running but I am still hot!

This is a common problem for all of us living in South Carolina. Unfortunately, if it’s over 100 degrees outside you won’t be able to lower the temperature inside to 65 degrees. It also depends if you have a lot of windows letting in the sun’s energy. You can lower the temperature indoors by closing the blinds, using fans, and plan your cooking and baking when the temperature drops a bit outside.

It happens when an AC unit installed in a particular house is not powerful enough to cool or heat all the living spaces. Call Brown & Reaves Services, Inc. and schedule an appointment with our technician. Our heating and cooling experts will be able to determine the best equipment for your house and give you a free estimate.

My air conditioning works but it doesn’t seem to work as good as last year..

One of the first questions our technicians will ask is, “when was the last time you changed the filters?” The problems with airflow inside your house may be due to dirty filters which should be replaced every 30 to 60 days. If changing filters doesn’t solve the problem call an HVAC technician to schedule a tune-up.

My air conditioning shuts on and off repeatedly

This can be the result of a lack of proper maintenance. Often times a condenser unit and/or an evaporator may become dirty and blocked by tall weeds, grass or any other debris. Go outside and check the unit, clean it and remove any obstructions if needed. If this won’t help you may need to call a professional.

Stay Safe

Please stay safe when dealing with HVAC appliances in your house. If you suspect the problem with your unit is related to the coolant, call a certified professional. Additionally, since AC units run on electricity many times malfunctions are directly related to electrical failures, such as failing capacitors, open or stuck relays or frequently tripped circuit breakers. If you experience an electrical problem with your unit do not attempt to fix it yourself. If it becomes necessary to replace any elements, a certified technician who comes to your house will know exactly how to match the voltage of any components with the AC system. Without proper training you may not only hurt yourself or your family, but you could also damage the unit and substantially increase the cost of future repairs.
